AICCCA Warns a Leading Cause of Bankruptcy Missing Early Warning Signs of Financial Trouble

Fairfax, VA - June 9, 2010 — Non-business bankruptcy filings more than doubled from 2006 to 2009. First quarter filings for 2010 increased almost 20 percent from first quarter filings in 2009. The Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA) urges consumers not to wait to get help if they are struggling financially or they may be too late to avoid bankruptcy.

"Consumers seeking help from our member offices are more and more often coming in too late to benefit from a debt management plan (DMP)," said Dave Jones, president, AICCCA. "In the recent past our member offices were able to help 20 to 25 percent of the consumers who came to us solve their debt problems with a DMP, but now it's only about seven to eight percent."

AICCCA warns if you are experiencing more than two of these early warning signs, seek help now:
  • Carrying credit card balances in excess of 10 percent of your annual income.

  • No money or an inadequate amount put aside in savings. An emergency savings cushion of three to six months of living expenses is crucial to staying in good financial health.

  • Using credit to purchase basic essentials. If you buy gas, groceries, prescription medicines or other essentials with your credit cards without a plan to repay in 90 days or less, chances are you are living beyond your means.

  • Can only afford to pay minimum payments. To pay down as much of your debt as soon as possible requires substantially more than the monthly minimum amount due.

  • Would be in immediate financial crisis with any disruption in income.
