AICCCA Offers Help For Red Tuesday Sufferers
FAIRFAX, VA - December 27, 2011 — The season of giving that kicked off with Black Friday
may have resulted in a Red Tuesday for those who did not plan their holiday expenses or simply
spent too much. For those consumers facing a Red Tuesday, the Association of Independent
Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies says that with patience and persistence they can take
control of their financial situation.
"Overspending is common during the holiday season and consumers might not always plan
for the increased spending," said Dave Jones, president, AICCCA. "For those consumers who
overspent using credit, a dose of financial reality will be coming in their mailboxes."
For those carrying holiday debt into 2012, AICCCA offers these tips:
- Buy only the basics. Create a bare bones spending plan to use until your debt is paid. Luxuries
and treats will need to wait, but you will start to make powerful decisions about how your money
is spent. If you stick to the plan and use the savings from watching your expenses to pay off your
debt, your Red Tuesday will be behind you quickly.
- Bring in some extra cash. If the money you save from your bare bones plan is not enough, a
second job or overtime may be in your future. If this is not possible, consider a garage sale or
selling something via an online auction site. Earmark all extra money toward your debt.
- Call in a professional. Holiday debt is not a unique problem and skilled professionals are ready
to help. If you need assistance, take advantage of the services of a qualified, non-profit credit
counseling service. An AICCCA member office can help get your financial life back on track.

- Think outside the box. Every present doesn't have to come in a gift-wrapped package. Coupons for services like dog walking, car washes or spring cleaning may be the perfect gift for someone on your list and will cost you little but time in the New Year. Best of all, there will be no lines to stand in, crowds to fight or new debt to worry about in 2012.
